Lumi is a living room lamp inspired by 1970s design. Its form draws on the organic, flowing shapes of the space age: a flattened, mushroom-shaped shade set on a slender stem with a solid, round base. Smooth lacquered surfaces and a saturated palette (caramel, ecru, cobalt) bring out the retro-futuristic character of the design.

01. Form
Lumi's shade takes the form of a flattened mushroom: an organic, rounded volume that tapers gently toward the edge, creating a distinctive light gap. Light is cast downward and to the sides, giving the soft, diffused glow typical of 1970s living room lamps.
The slender, cylindrical stem widens slightly at the bottom and flows into a solid, round, stepped base. The whole lamp is a single color: the monochrome finish emphasizes the sculptural form and its retro-futurist roots.
The lamp comes in three color variants: warm caramel, neutral ecru and deep cobalt. Each variant keeps the same form and differs only in surface finish: glossy lacquer or a matte texture.
A flattened, mushroom-like shape with an organic, flowing line. The gap between the shade and the stem creates a levitation effect.
A slender, cylindrical element connecting the shade to the base. The power cord runs through its center and ends in a pull-cord switch.
A solid, round base with a subtle step. It provides stability and the visual weight that balances the lightness of the shade.
Smooth high-gloss lacquer (caramel, cobalt) or a matte texture (ecru). The entire lamp is monochrome.
02. Design approach
A study of classic 1970s lamps: Verner Panton, Gae Aulenti, Joe Colombo. I chose the organic mushroom form as the starting point, combining nostalgia with contemporary elegance.
Precise modeling of the form in Rhinoceros, using NURBS curves for smooth, organic transitions between the shade and the stem. Several iterations on the proportions of the shade relative to the base.
Three color variants: caramel, ecru and cobalt. Photorealistic renders showing different surface finishes (gloss vs. matte).
03. Variants
Three color variants drawn from popular 1970s interior colors: a warm earth tone, a neutral light shade and a bold, deep accent.
